Bozen Victory Monument

The Victory Monument in Bozen (South Tyrol) in Victory Square is a relic from the fascist era in Italy. It was erected on the personal orders of Mussolini. The 19 metre wide Victory Gate was designed by architect Marcello Piacentini. Its construction was dedicated to the "Martyrs of the First World War".

The following Latin script can be seen on the façade: "Hic patriae fine siste signa. Hinc ceteros excoluimus lingua legibus artibus" ("Here at the border of the motherland stands a symbol. From this point we learned of other languages, realms and cultures"). It was inaugurated on 12th July 1928 by King Vittorio Emanuele III.

The name of the monument and the history-denying inscription was seen as provocative by many German-speaking South Tyrolers. On the day of the inauguration there was a counter-demonstration with 10,000 people in Innsbruck.

Many South Tyrolers call the monument the "Fascist Temple".
