Hong Kong (香港) competed as ”Hong Kong, China” (中國香港) at the 2004 Summer Olympics. After the end of British colonial rule in Hong Kong in 1997, Hong Kong has become a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China. Nonetheless, Hong Kong was allowed to maintain a separate delegation from that of the People's Republic of China to the Olympic Games and other international sport events.
In the 2004 Summer Olympics, Hong Kong sent a contingent of 33 athletes to compete in 10 sports. It was the 12th appearance of Hong Kong in the Summer Olympics.
In the 2004 Olympics, the “Hong Kong, China” Team won its second medal ever. It was a silver medal in table tennis. This was the first time that the flag of the Hong Kong Special Admistrative Region was raised in Olympic Games. While Hong Kong won the silver medal, China won the gold medal. The National Flag of the People’s Republic of China and the flag of the Hong Kong Speical Admistrative Region were raised at the same time.
In fact, this was the second time for Hong Kong to win a medal in the Olympic Games. The first time was in the 1996 Olympic Games, while Hong Kong was still under British colonial rule. Lee, Lai Shan won a gold medal in windsurfing. That was the one and only one time that the colonial flag of Hong Kong was raised in Olympic Games. Meanwhile, the National Anthem of the United Kingdom was played.
